Art

Summary of the course

GCSE Art and Design  is a vibrant, hands-on course that encourages students to find their own creative voice. It is less about "being good at drawing" and more about the journey of developing ideas, experimenting with materials, and learning from the work of other artists.

Component 1: Portfolio (The Coursework)
What it involves: A collection of work created throughout the course (usually Year 10 and the first half of Year 11). It includes at least one "sustained project" that shows the full journey from an initial idea to a finished final piece.
Format: Typically presented in sketchbooks, digital portfolios, or on large-scale boards.

Component 2: Externally Set Assignment (The Exam)
What it involves: Students choose one starting point from a list provided by AQA in January of Year 11.
The Process: After a "preparatory period" (several weeks of planning and research), students complete a 10-hour practical exam spread over two days to create their final outcome.

The Four Assessment Objectives (AOs)
To succeed, students must provide evidence for four key areas, which are equally weighted (25% each):

  • AO1 (Develop): Researching artists and cultures to inspire and develop your own ideas.
  • AO2 (Refine): Experimenting with different media, techniques, and processes (e.g., paint, clay, photography, or digital art).
  • AO3 (Record): Recording ideas and observations through drawing, photography, and written annotation.
  • AO4 (Present): Creating a personal and meaningful final piece that brings all your research and experiments together.
